An App for Car and Family Safety on the Road

Did you know…

  • Kawasaki recalled certain Concours 14 police motorcycles? The installation of law enforcement features on the vehicles could reduce the ability to brake or stall the vehicle and increase the risk of a crash.
  • Toyota recalled certain 2005 through 2011 Lexus vehicles? The possibility of loose bolts in the gear housing could cause the engine to cease, leading to an increased chance of an accident or crash.
  • Toyota also recalled its Highlander hybrid because it may unexpectedly enter safety mode operation or stall while being driven?

Given the possibility that information of this type might be important to you, or a family member, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) makes it easy to stay current on recall and other safety information through its free SaferCar app. It is currently available from iTunes for iPhone and iPod Touch devices, and an Android-compatible version is underway.

The app, released in July, aims to provide consumers with portable information about issues that concern them, including:

  • Crash test results that allow users to compare ratings for vehicles they own or might like to own, rent or lease
  • Safety information about complaints received and recalls issued
  • Topical news from NHTSA about safety issues particular to a vehicle registered on the app
  • Information about car seat safety, including a guide to local help for safe installation of a car or booster seat

Sometimes things you don’t know can hurt you. Consider the SaferCar app to stay informed of car safety issues that affect you, your friends and family.
