Cyclist Critically Injured After Collision with Bus

A cyclist recently collided with a Metropolitan Transit Authority (MTA) bus, leaving him critically injured. The cyclist was reportedly riding at South 5th St. in Williamsburg when he struck the bus. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital and was listed in critical condition.

Earlier this year, an MTA bus driver faced charges after hitting a 15-year-old girl and severely injuring her leg. Both bikes and buses help reduce traffic congestion and enable people to move more efficiently throughout the city, but dangers exist when bikers set out in traffic-laden streets. Although bus drivers are required to follow safety practices and remain alert for cyclists, riders should also take steps to ensure their safety.

Bike riders’ first rule of safety should be to ride predictably. They should never pass a bus on the right side when a bus is in a right lane due to decreased visibility. Riders should likewise follow all traffic rules and regulations — such as stopping at red lights and stop signs — and avoid weaving in and out of traffic or transitioning from the sidewalk to the street without signaling. When crossing the path of a bus, cyclists should make sure they make eye contact with the driver to ensure they have been seen.

Outfitting bikes with a white headlight and red taillight will also make bikes more visible to buses and other vehicles. Other safety precautions include avoiding wearing earphones, although wearing a single earbud is acceptable by law. Helmets, while only required for riders 13 or younger and working cyclists, is still an important safety measure for all riders young and old.
