Barclays Center Construction Worker Killed by Steel Joist

March 30, 2015 | Dominique A. Penson

There has been a great deal of construction around the Barclays Center recently as crews are working on installing a brand-new, environmentally friendly roof. However, a recent accident at the site led to the death of one worker, which has led to significant concerns about safety at the arena.

The deceased iron worker, Peter Zepf, was employed by a subcontractor who was installing a new green roof on the arena when steel joists meant for the roof rolled off a truck before they had been securely fastened to the crane that was to move them into position on the roof. The worker was crushed by at least one of those joists as they fell, and the resulting injuries led to the fatality.  The tragic accident is being investigated by OSHA.

When a construction worker is injured or dies on a work site, his or her family members have the legal right to compensation from the parties they believe might be at fault. This could occur if the project manager was negligent in failing to provide a reasonably safe environment for workers, and that negligence was at least partially responsible for the workers’ death.
