Common Road Hazards for Motorcycles – The Importance of Defensive Driving

May 28, 2015 | Dominique A. Penson

There are many different hazards to motorcycle riders, which means that these drivers should be prepared for anything that could come their way whenever they take the road. The following are some tips that should help you to avoid common road hazards that could cause an accident while out on your bike:

  • Avoid heavy traffic. This way, you’ll have more time and space to navigate around hazards in the road if you should encounter one.
  • Never get too close to other vehicles. Follow at a safe distance of at least one car length per every 10 MPH behind other vehicles on the road. Tailgating only increases the risk of an accident.
  • Plan your escape. If you see potential hazards in the distance, scan the area and see what your options are to escape hitting them. You may be able to travel safely along the shoulder to avoid some loose gravel, or determine whether you are able to merge into another lane based on the traffic around you.
  • Avoid driving in bad weather. When it’s raining or snowing, it takes longer for all vehicles to stop and/or avoid a hazard in the road.  It’s more likely that you’ll lose control and slide on the road. If at all possible, avoid using the bike when the weather is bad.
  • Slow down. Your speed should always match the sight distance that you have. If you anticipate or see a hazard, make sure that you reduce your speed.
  • Note regular hazards that you encounter. If you drive the same way regularly and know that there is a big bump here or a pothole there, make sure that you take a mental note of these hazards so that you know how to avoid them each time you pass through the area.
