Mike Barasch commented on two recent construction accidents in New York City:

“These tragedies highlight the importance of construction safety, as these were preventable and avoidable accidents. Construction companies and the landlords that own the buildings under construction must be held accountable for their failure to abide by the safety rules and regulations put in place to protect not only construction workers, but the general public. While violations written by City agencies may help to correct safety issues, lawsuits that hit these companies where it counts – their bank accounts – is a sure fire way to get their attention. Lawsuits do more than just compensate the injured party, they help deter and prevent future construction accidents from occurring. Our hearts and prayers go out to the family of Mr. Mata, the 32 year-old who was fatally hit in the head by falling debris as he was walking near a building undergoing construction. We also wish the speedy recovery of the construction worker that was knocked unconscious and had to be rescued from the trench he fell into by the FDNY paramedics.”
