New York Workplace Accident Statistics

Many people have seen some of the national statistics indicating that the construction industry remains the most dangerous and deadly sector in the United States in terms of overall worker death and injury totals. But what do some of these statistics look like in New York City?

The following are some numbers from the Big Apple in 2013, the last year for which statistics are available:

• The year saw 56 total fatal work accidents, down from 78 in 2012. This was actually the lowest total since recording of the number began in 1992. The highest-ever total was 191 in 1993.
• For comparison, 2013 saw 4,405 total fatal work accidents nationwide, which was slightly down from 2012.
• Of the fatal work accidents that happened in New York City in 2013, 15 were a result of violence or injuries caused by other people and animals, and 15 from slips, trips and falls.
• Nationwide, transportation accidents account for about 40 percent of all fatal work accidents. New York’s percentage is lower — at approximately 20 percent.
• Other causes of workplace deaths in 2013 included exposure to harmful substances or environments (6) and contact with objects and equipment (7).

These are just a few statistics, but they should give you a general idea of how New York City compares to the rest of the country. Fortunately, the number of total fatal workplace accidents seems to be on a downward trend both here and across the U.S.
