Truck Accidents Resulting from Faulty Tires

March 19, 2015 | Dominique A. Penson

While the most common cause of truck accidents is driver error, another significant number of truck accidents are due to tire-related issues. When tires blow out, it becomes easy for the driver to lose control of the vehicle, which could lead to the vehicle tipping or careening into other cars on the road.

Here are some of the common causes of tire failure in semi trucks:

  • Defective tires. The tire manufacturer may have provided a defective tire to the trucking company. Tires are occasionally recalled, so companies should be sure to constantly check the Department of Transportation to make sure there have been no recent equipment recalls.
  • Failure to properly maintain tires. Trucking companies need to keep their tires in good working condition to ensure their safety. Common maintenance mistakes include drivers using tires that do not meet the minimum tread depths required by the Department of Transportation, using tire sizes that do not match or tires that have very different amounts of wear, and mixing radial and bias tires on the same axle.
  • Failure to inspect tires before trips. Truck drivers are required to make full pre-trip truck inspections, and tires are a part of those inspections. Tires should not be overly worn, should have the right amount of tire pressure and should not have any damage or leaks.

These are just a few of the most common issues involving tires on large commercial trucks. If any of these factors contributed to an accident, the truck company or driver could be held liable.
