What to Do After a Taxi Accident

December 30, 2013 | Michael Barasch

If you are driving your car and you are involved in an accident, chances are that you have some idea about who is at fault. Knowing whom to blame when you suffer injury in a NY taxi collision, however, may be more difficult.

Here is what to do if you are involved in a taxicab accident in New York:

  • Seek medical attention — You may be angry and frustrated. No one expects to suffer injury in the back of a taxi. However, above all else, your primary concern must be your health. Even if you think you only suffered minor injuries, be sure to get checked out at the hospital.
  • Take pictures — If you are able to do so, taking pictures of the relevant accident scene is a good idea in any type of accident. In addition to photographing the cab, be sure to snap shots of other vehicles involved and your injuries.
  • Contact a lawyer — Next to seeing a doctor, consulting with a lawyer is the most important step you can take after sustaining injury in any type of accident. Your lawyer can review your case and help you obtain compensation under the cab company’s insurance policy.

An attorney can also help you take legal action if you are struck by a cab while riding a bike in New York. However, since the insurance companies that process injury claims in New York are known for being difficult, it is in your best interests to only retain experienced legal counsel.
