What You Need to Do To Protect Yourself After an Auto Accident

October 2, 2012 | Michael Barasch

The best time to prepare for an accident is before it ever happens. Even if you drive defensively and follow all safety laws, many drivers choose not to do so. If possible, obtain orange emergency cones and keep them in your trunk in the event of an accident. You should also ensure that your emergency flashers work and that your insurance card is in the vehicle. Taking a few minutes to jot down medical information and keeping it in your car is also helpful in an accident situation.

Right after the collision

Immediately after an accident, turn your emergency lights on and try to move your car to the side of the road. If anyone is injured, getting help for that person needs to be your first priority. You will need to call 911 to report the accident, whether injuries are involved or not. Before the police arrive, exchange information with the other driver. At a minimum, you will need the driver’s name, address, telephone number and name of his or her insurance carrier. It is also helpful to get the other party’s date of birth and driver’s license number. After arriving home, your first call should be to your insurance company to report the accident.
